Why Retainers Matter After Orthodontic Treatment
Retainers are custom-made appliances designed to keep your teeth in place after active treatment. Even after your braces come off or you finish your last set of aligners, your teeth are supported by bone and soft tissues that need time to stabilize. Without consistent retainer wear as directed by Dr. O’Leary or Dr. Hack, your teeth can shift, undoing all the hard work you’ve put in. Wearing your retainer is a lifetime commitment to ensure your teeth stay in their newly, beautifully aligned positions.
With a personalized retention plan from OASECT, you can enjoy your beautiful smile for years to come.
Types of Retainers Offered at OASECT
We offer various high-quality retainer options to fit your lifestyle and needs. If you’re not sure which retainer is best for you, our team will help you make the right choice from these cutting-edge options:
Clear Prezurv® Retainers
Prezurv clear retainers are discreet, removable, and comfortable. They’re perfect for patients who want a reliable, nearly invisible appliance.
Crafted from durable, clear plastic, these retainers are easy to wear and maintain. They’re similar in appearance to clear aligners, allowing you to confidently show off your smile with hardly anyone noticing that you’re wearing a retainer.
Vivera® Retainers by Invisalign
For patients who completed treatment with Invisalign, Vivera retainers will feel quite familiar, as they’re made from the same SmartTrack® material. They offer a precise fit for ultimate comfort and are great for anyone seeking a discreet retainer option.
Made using advanced 3D imaging technology, Vivera retainers will fit your smile perfectly to help maintain your beautiful results. These removable retainers are known for their durability and long-lasting wear.
Bonded (Permanent) Retainers
A bonded retainer is a thin wire attached to the back of your front teeth. This fixed option works in conjunction with clear removable retainers, providing around-the-clock support to hold your teeth in place.
Because they’re placed behind your teeth, they’re completely invisible, and you never have to worry about misplacing them.
Hawley Wire Retainers
The Hawley retainer is a traditional option made with a custom acrylic base and a thin wire that holds your teeth in position.
These retainers are adjustable and durable, offering a reliable way to maintain your smile for years.
Advanced Impression-Free Technology
At OASECT, we use state-of-the-art intraoral scanning technology to create your retainers—no messy impressions needed! Our advanced 3D scanner captures a precise digital model of your teeth, ensuring a perfect fit for every appliance. This technology eliminates the discomfort of traditional molds, making your retainer experience smooth and stress-free.
Caring for Your Retainers
Proper care is essential to keeping your retainers and smile in top condition. Here are some simple tips for each retainer type:
For Removable Retainers (Prezurv, Vivera, Hawley)
- Clean Daily: Use a soft toothbrush and mild soap (Dawn dish soap works great!) to clean your retainer gently. Avoid using toothpaste, which can damage the surface.
- Avoid Heat: Keep your retainer away from hot water, dishwashers, direct sunlight, and avoid leaving it in hot cars. Heat can warp retainers and potentially cause you to have to replace them.
- Store Safely: Always place your retainer in its case when not in use to prevent loss or damage.
- Keep Away from Pets: Pets often find retainers irresistible to chew on, so store them out of reach.
For Bonded Retainers
- Maintain Excellent Oral Hygiene: Floss around the wire daily to prevent plaque buildup.
- Use Specialized Tools: A water flosser is the best and easiest way to clean between teeth and get to those hard-to-reach areas.
- Be Cautious with Food: Avoid biting into hard or sticky foods that can dislodge the wire.
